When parents are looking for ways to help their struggling students, they often don’t know how to determine whether their child would benefit more from an Academic Tutor or an Executive Function Coach. Of course, both can play an important role in supporting a child’s learning, but they each focus on different areas of development.

To help determine how to best support your student, it is helpful to consider a few things:

An Academic Tutor provides content-specific instruction to help students improve their understanding and performance in areas like reading, math, writing, and science. To see if an Academic Tutor could be a good solution, you may ask yourself:

• Is my child below grade-level expectations?
• Is my child having difficulty understanding concepts?
• Is my child getting low scores on homework?
• Is my child performing poorly on tests?
• Is my child’s overall grade low?
• Has my child’s teacher addressed concerns?

An Executive Function Coach helps students improve the cognitive skills that allow them to plan, organize, manage time, self-regulate, get started, stay focused, and follow through on tasks. To see if an Executive Function Coach could be a good solution, you may ask yourself:

• Is my child often missing homework, materials, and due dates?
• Is my child procrastinating and not allowing enough time to finish?
• Is my child easily distracted and getting off task?
• Is my child getting frustrated and struggling to manage emotions?
• Is my child unaware of strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles?
• Is my child getting stuck on one solution and not able to move past it?
